Municipal Directory is a free lookup for U.S. local government. Arrive with one city in mind and the directory opens its profile: the county and region it sits in, its population, when its council meets, how to reach its offices, and the people who currently hold each municipal office, from mayor and clerk to council members and department heads. The official search works the other way round, from a name to the post that person holds.

Coverage grows one state at a time, compiled from whichever body authoritatively publishes that state’s municipalities: a state municipal league, a secretary of state, a state archive, or a university institute. Each state page names its source, and every city and official record links back to the publication it came from. Where a state publishes no roster of officeholders, the directory lists the Census places alone. Population figures come from Census place estimates throughout. The source decides which fields are published, so a city page may carry a full roster of officials, a partial one, or none yet.

Click a state to open its page; hover or focus one for its population, city, county and official counts. Populations count the cities we list rather than the whole state, and states marked with a dot are too small for a name. The pins mark the largest cities we list and lead to their profiles. Alaska and Hawaii are off the mainland map — Alaska · Hawaii — and all 51 state pages are on the states index.
